Jon Rakoski Claims First Major Title at 2024 USBC Senior Masters
Jon Rakoski entered Sunday with one PBA50 Tour title. By the end of the day, he had secured his second title and his first major championship at the 2024 USBC Senior Masters. His victory was the result of a week of strategic play, trust in his ball representative Jeff Johnson, and near-perfect execution in the championship match.
A Crucial Adjustment Leads to Victory
Before the championship match, Johnson advised Rakoski to use a newly drilled ball on the right lane, a decision that proved instrumental in the final. Johnson’s guidance throughout the week had already led to success, including a pivotal match-play moment where he convinced Rakoski to use different balls on each lane—a move that helped him roll a 280game.
Rakoski went undefeated in match play on Friday and Saturday, securing the No. 1 seed heading into Sunday’s final. In the championship match against Mike Bailey, Rakoski opened with seven consecutive strikes, celebrating with a fist pump after securing the title. Despite leaving a 10-pin in the 10th frame, he closed with a strong finish, earning a 278-200victory.
Bailey’s Impressive Run Falls Short
Bailey had been dominant throughout the stepladder finals, posting scores of 242, 277, and 269 in his three previous matches. However, struggles on the left lane led to open frames in the third and seventh frames of the title match, which proved costly.
Bailey’s road to the final included victories over Andres Gomez (242-236), John Janawicz (277-267), and Randy Weiss (269-218). In the semifinal, Bailey delivered his first clean game of the day, but an untimely open frame by Weiss gave Bailey the opening he needed to advance.
An Emotional Victory and a Look Ahead
After securing the championship, Rakoski shared an emotional phone call with his wife, Cheryl, who had encouraged him to pursue full-time competition on the PBA50 Tour just last year.
“It has been a crazy whirlwind,” Rakoski said. “Everything I’ve put into my bowling career came to fruition this week.”
With this win, Rakoski took home the $20,000 first-place prize. His championship trophy will soon be displayed in a new trophy case alongside his 2023 PBA50 Monacelli Championship trophy and his USBC Open Championships Eagle.
Looking ahead, Rakoski and Johnson will travel to Greeley, Colorado, for the 2024 PBA Senior U.S. Open, which begins Thursday.
