Chris Barnes Clinches PBA50 Ballard Championship Title

Chris Barnes emerged victorious at the 2024 PBA50 Ballard Championship, defeating Tony Oliva in an intense final match at the World Series of Bowling II. The Hall of Famer secured his sixth PBA50 title, delivering a dominant performance at JAX 60.

A Close Battle in the Championship Match

Tony Oliva, competing in his first-ever PBA50 event, faced a tough challenge against Barnes. The match began with Oliva encountering an unfortunate solid 8-pin on the left lane, which he spared. After a second-frame spare, he managed to string together a double before suffering another solid 8-pin in the fifth frame.

Meanwhile, Barnes opened with five consecutive strikes, putting early pressure on Oliva. The Wisconsin native fought back with three strikes, accompanied by emphatic fist pumps. However, Barnes remained relentless, filling his first eight frames with strikes.

A crucial moment came in the ninth frame when Oliva left a 2-8 sleeper, which he successfully converted. On his next shot, Barnes nearly had another messenger take down the 10-pin, but it stayed upright. He smiled, converted the spare, and sealed the win with a final score of 267-225.

After the match, Barnes acknowledged Oliva’s tough luck.
“Tony was really unlucky—two stone-8s. He threw it great and really did plenty to win. If my scouts missed a couple of those 10-pins and he carried the two 8-pins, the match is basically flipped. He shoots 260 and wins.”

Barnes’ Success at JAX 60

This win marked Barnes’ first title in over a year, with his last victory coming at the 2023 PBA50 World Championship, also held at JAX 60.

“I don’t even know what it is necessarily about this place, but my ball likes to strike here at least more than other people. It’s fun to get back in the winner’s circle.”

Although Barnes had previously made multiple TV appearances this season—including a fifth-place finish and three third-place finishes—he had not been able to capitalize on them until now.

“It’s nice to make the right choice, and it worked out.”

Road to the Finals: Stepladder Matches Recap

Match 1: Jason Couch vs. Bo Goergen

Jason Couch, the tournament’s top qualifier, took on Bo Goergen in the opening stepladder match. Couch controlled the game, winning 232-185.

Match 2: Mika Koivuniemi vs. Jason Couch

Couch then faced No. 3 seed Mika Koivuniemi, who had previously defeated him in the Round of 8. Both players started strong, but a 4-10 split in the sixth frame cost Couch dearly. Koivuniemi, staying clean throughout, finished with five consecutive strikes to win 259-221.

Semifinal: Tony Oliva vs. Mika Koivuniemi

In the semifinal match, Oliva opened with three spares while Koivuniemi struck three times on the left lane but struggled on the right. After making an adjustment in the fourth frame, Oliva strung together eight consecutive strikes, securing a 263-207 victory and a spot in the championship match against Barnes.

Next Challenge: PBA50 Monacelli Championship

Barnes won’t have much time to celebrate as he now shifts focus to the PBA50 Monacelli Championship. As the top seed, he will face No. 16 seed Troy Stus in a best-of-five Round of 16 match. A victory would guarantee him a spot in his third consecutive stepladder finals.

Barnes acknowledged the difficulty of his upcoming match.
“It’s not really the No. 1 vs. No. 16 draw that you might hope for. Hopefully, the same balls work that worked in qualifying, but I’ll be ready with a couple of options in case they don’t.”

  • Round of 8 matches begin at 3 p.m. ET.
  • The stepladder finals will start at 6 p.m. ET.
  • All rounds of the Monacelli Championship can be streamed live on BowlTV.
