John Janawicz Secures Fourth PBA50 Major Title, Becomes Hall of Fame Eligible
John Janawicz’s legend continues to grow as he clinched his fourth major title on the PBA50 Tour, winning the 2024 Bud Moore PBA50 Players Championship. This victory marks his fifth career PBA50 title and solidifies his eligibility for the PBA Hall of Fame.
From Myth to Reality: Janawicz’s Dominance on the PBA50 Tour
For years, John Janawicz was often regarded as one of the best bowlers never to compete full-time on the PBA Tour. However, in just one and a half seasons on the PBA50 circuit, he has more than lived up to the hype.
In the championship stepladder, Janawicz faced and defeated Liz Johnson, Chris Barnes, and Mika Koivuniemi to secure the title. Reflecting on his journey, he acknowledged both skill and fortune in his success:
“You always have the confidence that you can win every week, but to do it is another whole thing. Not only do you have to bowl well, but you have to have some things go your way,” Janawicz said.
This latest triumph grants him eligibility for the PBA Hall of Fame once he reaches 10 years of PBA membership. While he remains focused on competing as long as his body allows, Janawicz recognizes the milestone.
“Just because I’m eligible doesn’t mean I’m going to get in, but it’s nice to know that you satisfy the criteria,” he stated.
Liz Johnson Makes History in PBA50 Tour Debut
Janawicz was not the only bowler to make history during the championship. Liz Johnson, a trailblazer in the sport, became the first woman to reach a PBA50 Tour championship round. She had previously made history by becoming the first woman to reach a televised PBA Tour final in 2005.
Johnson impressed in her PBA50 debut, opening with a commanding 257-245 victory over Jon Rakoski. However, her run ended in the next match against Janawicz. A costly split in the fifth frame, combined with Janawicz’s clutch conversion of a super-washout, sealed her fate in a 233-205 loss.
Janawicz’s Path to the Title
Chris Barnes made an incredible push in the morning match play session, climbing from 155 pins out of the championship round to claim the No. 2 seed. However, he struggled in the semifinal match against Janawicz, falling 269-173.
Mika Koivuniemi, known as “Major Mika” for his success in high-stakes tournaments, secured the top seed after an outstanding performance throughout qualifying and match play. However, in the championship match, neither he nor Janawicz managed to break 200.
After both players made key mistakes, Koivuniemi had a chance to clinch the title with a double in the 10th frame. Instead, he left the 3-6-10 spare, sealing Janawicz’s victory with a final score of 193-182.
A Remarkable Run Continues
Since turning 50 and joining the PBA50 Tour in 2023, Janawicz has been on an extraordinary run. His journey began with a regional win to qualify for the PBA50 Tournament of Champions (TOC). Four months later, he won the USBC Senior Masters and the TOC itself.
Now in 2024, Janawicz has won three titles, including the Senior U.S. Open and the Bud Moore PBA50 Players Championship. He currently leads the PBA50 Player of the Year race and has claimed four of the five possible PBA50 major titles in just eight attempts.
The one remaining major he has yet to conquer? The PBA50 World Championship, which begins next week in Jackson, Michigan.
“It’s been a magical ride,” Janawicz said. “The goals remain the same: stay healthy and keep learning. If I can just get a little bit smarter than I was yesterday and not make the same mistakes I made the day before, I’ll be content with whatever the results are.”

「資格を満たしたからといって、殿堂入りできるわけではない。でも、基準を満たせたことは嬉しい。体が持つ限り、これからも挑戦し続けるつもりだ。」
ヤナウィッツはすでに今シーズン3つのタイトルを獲得し、PBA50年間最優秀選手（Player of the Year）争いのトップを走っている。
リズ・ジョンソン、PBA50ツアー史上初の女性決勝進出！
ヤナウィッツの優勝とともに話題となったのが、リズ・ジョンソンの快挙だ。彼女は、PBA50ツアー史上初めてチャンピオンシップラウンドに進出した女性となった。
初戦ではジョン・ラコスキーを破り、2回戦でヤナウィッツと対戦。序盤は互角の展開だったが、第5フレームで痛恨のスプリットミス。ヤナウィッツが第6フレームでスーパー・ウォッシュアウトをカバーし、流れを引き寄せた。

しかし、決勝では両者とも苦戦。コイブニエミは第1フレームで3-6-10を残しミス。ヤナウィッツも第6フレームで2-4-8-10のスプリットを出し、スペアを取れずに6ピンを失うミスを犯した。
この時、ヤナウィッツは今年ダートマス大学の卒業式でロジャー・フェデラーが語った言葉を思い出したという。
「フェデラーは、試合の80%に勝ったが、ポイントの54%しか取れていなかった。つまり、すべてのポイントを取らなくても勝てるということだ。」
この考え方がヤナウィッツを冷静にさせた。そして、第9フレームと第10フレームで連続ストライク。最終スコア193対182で、劇的な優勝を果たした。
PBA50ワールドチャンピオンシップに向けて
ヤナウィッツは現在、PBA50ツアーのメジャー大会で4勝を挙げている。唯一未勝利なのはPBA50ワールドチャンピオンシップ。来週ミシガン州ジャクソンで開幕するこの大会に、彼は新たな目標を掲げて挑む。
「ここまでの旅はまさに魔法のようだった。大事なのは、健康を維持し、常に学び続けること。昨日より少し賢くなれれば、それで満足だ。」
